The following add-ons we'd like to add a QR code to their description field to test if people will use QR code as a convenient way to send add-ons to the phone. Read Later: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/mobile/addon/144983/ TwitterBar: The QR code should appear on desktop add-on description, but should install the mobile add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/mobile/addon/4664/ If we can add copy: TwitterBar desktop: Want TwitterBar on your mobile Firefox? Scan this QR code with your phone to install it directly to your phone. (To scan the QR code, you must install a QR reader app to your phone. We recommend search for a free "QR Reader") Read Later for mobile: Send this add-on to your mobile Firefox. Scan this QR code with your phone to install it directly to your phone. (To scan the QR code, you must install a QR reader app to your phone. We recommend search for a free "QR Reader") Let me know if you have any questions.

We'd like to see the QR code hardcoding as soon as it's possible. It would be great to know when this might be reasonable to achieve on your end. Thanks for the update.

http://github.com/chenba/zamboni/commit/abbf35520612326a784583e90eb7dec693064a14 Hardcoded the check for these two mobile addons in the addon details template. The verbiage given by Caitlin is slightly different between the two addons ("Want TwitterBar on your mobile Firefox?" vs. "Send this add-on to your mobile Firefox."). I went with the first format. See attached screen capture on what it looks like. There's quite a bit of whitespace between the addon description and the image gallery if the description is fairly short.

Hey Barry, Sorry, I just realized the codes above don't have download tracking codes which are what we need to figure out how many people are actually using the codes. Can we swap out the images with: Read Later: http://qrcode.kaywa.com/img.php?s=8&d=https%3A%2F%2Faddons.mozilla.org%2Fen-US%2Fmobile%2Faddon%2F144983%2F%3Fsrc%3Dexternal-qrcode TwitterBar: http://qrcode.kaywa.com/img.php?s=8&d=https%3A%2F%2Faddons.mozilla.org%2Fen-US%2Fmobile%2Faddon%2F4664%2F%3Fsrc%3Dexternal-qrcode As for styling, I think reducing the font size a bit and giving some padding around the text is all that's needed. Thanks! Caitlin, have we informed the developers of this test?

I agree the text is a little verbose. Also, the grammar in the last sentence is wrong. How about: Want ____ on your mobile Firefox? Scan this QR code to install directly to your phone. (You'll need a QR reader. Search your phone's marketplace if don't have one.) If you don't like that, can you give us a new last sentence for the existing text?

Great, thanks. The proposed copy is fine. Yes, both developers are in the know.

@fligtar Thanks for the tracking URLs. That makes more sense. Although the images you linked are a little too large. :) http://github.com/chenba/zamboni/commit/83b126ddd721a967476dbf406c5444e93cac2522 The images are now generated with the tracking GET param. They are smaller than the previous commit. Made the suggested changes to the accompanying text. See updated screen capture.

This went live last Tuesday. So far, Reading Last has had no QR downloads and TwitterBar has had 1, which I think was me testing it. I'll keep an eye on these over the next month or so to see if there's any improvement.

Thanks a ton. At least we're learning something.

How is this going?
Comment 18•13 years ago
|

Looks like 2-3 downloads a week from the QR code.

(In reply to comment #18) > Looks like 2-3 downloads a week from the QR code. So are we going to expand or remove it?

Doesn't seem like the best approach with that number. I think we can remove this as approach as a widespread option. That said, I wonder if there is any type of over-the-air approach we can look into a la Android Market apps.
