When opening a file created in Windows with gedit and copy-pasting the text into a text field in Firefox the result have extra lines.

This happens only with gedit (I tested with a few other text editors for GNU\Linux including mouspad, Abiword and Open Office Writer and the problem did not occured). It did neither occurred when using Wine's notepad. It happened already with Firefox 2.0.0.14 and with all Firefox versions I used since. It happens with text editing fields of any website (tested on Wikipedia, Google Translate and W3C Validator direct input).

This bug has actually already been reported to gnome/gedit (see here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=537299) but the result was that the bug was declared to be Firefox's error.
Precisely Jesse van den Kieboom [gedit developer] wrote:
This is really a problem of firefox I would say, because it should be able to
handle CRLF.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a text using CR+LF with gedit and copy it
2. Paste it into a text field of a web page in Firefox
3. submit your text
Actual Results:
the text have unwanted extra lines

Expected Results:
the text should be similar to original (no extra lines)

Bug only happens with gedit but the error might be coming from Firefox
See the bug report on Gnome's bugzilla:
