Can you check the firewall settings and make sure they allow Thunderbird to connect to the internet ?

bnknowles, results? who is your mail account with? If you are using webmail extension http://groups.google.com/group/thunderbird-webmail-extension/browse_thread/thread/1d5cea59366404fc/0054c67d21664d01?pli=1 may be relevant. Otherwise, what are your authentication settings?
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=1880845 reports something similar - no resolution there
