Too many spammers crosspost garbage into various & sundry newsgroups. Currently, the only way to filter these crosspostings is to list each unwanted newsgroup. This approach basically isn't scalable & the frustrated reaction is to just unsubscribe from the deluged newsgroup. Since Thunderbird doesn't have a no-crossposts toggle, providing a filter rule for Newsgroups that is "does not contain" would allow the listing of the desired newsgroup & the exclusion of all the crosspostings.

You should be able to filter on the Newsgroups header via arbitrary headers. If you also want to ban any crossposted messages,
[ Newsgroups v ] [ contains ] ',' should filter at any crossposted message.

Is this basically bug 618624 ? Do you wish the 'doesn't contain' filter operator? The 'contains' one already exists.

sorry for the delay - only just found the notice. unfortunately i've completely lost access to newsgroups through thunderbird. the 'doesn't contain' filter would probably answer my request, though.

Great. And I implemented 'doesn't contain' operator in bug 618624. It should be in Thunderbird 10 (released in 3 weeks).
Reopen this bug if it does not help you.
