Set app.update.log and devtools.errorconsole.enabled to true in about:config and restart Firefox.

Open the error console and clear it. Perform a check for updates in the about window. In the error console find the entry that starts with "AUS:SVC Checker:getUpdateURL - update URL:" and paste it in this bug
Here's what I get for "Check For Updates":
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80570016 (NS_ERROR_XPC_GS_RETURNED_FAILURE) [nsIJSCID.getService]" nsresult: "0x80570016 (NS_ERROR_XPC_GS_RETURNED_FAILURE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://browser/content/utilityOverlay.js :: checkForUpdates :: line 421" data: no]
Ben: I am not seeing this on x64 Mac - I just updated from the 20100922 build and when I check for updates on the 20100923 build I get "There are no updates available" and no errors in the console.
FoxyProxy was causing this

Please zip up the FoxyProxy extension and if it is small enough attach it to this bug. Then I'll check how it caused this and if we can protect against this happening in the future
I already deleted it, unfortunately. It hasn't changed since I downloaded it from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2464/contribute/roadblock/?src=addondetail, though. I _think_ this is the one I had:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/addons/2464/foxyproxy_standard-2.22.1-fx+sm+tb.xpi
Marcia, can you try to reproduce by installing FoxyProxy.

btw: I wasn't able to reproduce on Windows
I'm not seeing this here, foxyproxy appears to be pretty broken and is throwing errors into the console but check for updates opens the window just fine.
I downloaded the same extension version as in Comment 6 and wasn't able to reproduce. As Dave notes in Comment 8, the extension produces a number of errors in the console and doesn't properly show in the Tools Menu, but Check for Updates still WFM.

bhearsum, can we get a list of your installed extensions? It might be due to an interaction between FoxyProxy and another extension.
