This is a request for a graphical shell based on the Mozilla framework. The idea is to allow the execution of executable files that are stored locally. Since Mozilla already supports browsing of local filesystems via file:// urls and opening of various files using helpers, adding the ability to execute local binaries (scripts can already be done with helpers) would allow one to use Mozilla as a graphical shell / file manager.

Note: this bug started out as bug 59896 and has been reopened for clarity. Comments from 59896: ------- Additional Comments From Jason Kersey 2000-11-12 15:09 ------- This is a rfe for being able to use mozilla as a file manager/task launcher. Currently, when you run local programs, it treats them as remote programs, and asks how to handle them. Basically, to make this work, there needs to be a way to determine local vs. remote, and how to run a program in place, rather than try to download it.

Mozilla needs a way to browse just the folder structure, not including the files. Just like the Folders explorer bar in IE. Calling file:// does not do this correctly because it shows files. The Windows API has a special widget ("control") for showing just a folder structure. Moz needs a widget like this, based perhaps on outliner. Furthermore, Mozilla needs capabilities to be like a desktop and to have Windows taskbar-like functionality.
bamn: I think you are asking for a lot of stuff that is beyond what this RFE is about. I suggest opening a new RFE in XP-Apps.
Summary: [rfe]mozilla as a file manager/task launcher → mozilla as a file manager/task launcher
