We used to automatically show the full weekday name when there is room in the multiweek view. I can confirm this still works with 1.0b2, but on current trunk this is no longer the case. The full weekday name is always shown, a horizontal scrollbar is shown at the bottom of the view on overflow.

Works for me using Lightning 1.1a1pre (BuildID: 20101003041818) with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:2.0b7pre) Gecko/20101004 Thunderbird/3.3a1pre (new profile).
Works for me too now, seemed to be an intermittent error.
