When it happens, the only solution is hard reboot, after which in Xorg.0.log.old appears the following error:
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.

That message is not a single bug from Xserver, since there are many reasons that can cause that error in X's log. See this thread (#8 reply) for more details:

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Go to: "http://www.hermanmiller.com" 
2.Move mouse to product and click on seating.
3.Then click the first or second model link on that page.
Actual Results:  
1 out 5 times, the problem happens:
1. Mouse become sluggish.
2. Everything else lost responses, including keyboards.

I would like to mention that I appear to have reproduced this on my system. The Xorg server lockup is triggered ONLY when using Firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101206 Ubuntu/10.10 (maverick) Firefox/3.6.13). It does not even happen all the time; however, I can consistently overflow Xorg's event queue if I view a particular JPEG file, such as
http://www.ujenanetwork.com/gallery/2005-07-23/full/1814.jpg

(It should be noted that Chromium has no issues rendering the above JPEG.)

So far, this issue seems to be isolated to x86_64 systems. In my case, I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. Was running the Namoroka build from the Mozilla PPA when I first noticed the problem; updated to the version listed and the issue continues.

Is there anything specific I should try?

Well, looks like this may have been fixed. 

The first JPEG I linked to, after re-checking, does not crash 3.6.13. This one does:

However, I cannot reproduce the issue with one of the nightly builds from the Mozilla PPA:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0b8pre) Gecko/20101103 Firefox-4.0/4.0b8pre

So it appears that something was changed between 3.6.13 and 4.0b8 which affects this bug. It also may be worth checking if an extension triggers this crash. I don't think it's the Ubuntu build that's the issue because I had a Mozilla PPA build of Firefox (Namoroka) installed which began crashing; when I updated, the Ubuntu 3.6.13 package was installed, which also crashed.
