In bug 602201 we saw a problem where a missing column in an HBase table caused a very unspecific error message, and it took us a while to track down the real cause.

Let's figure out either how to get a better error message out of Thrift, or if that's just not available right now we should consider doing some kind of simple verification of the HBase schema before using it (we should be able to do a "describe" on the table).
