Indicate the last selected tab in each group graphically
From bug 597601 #comment 5 "I still think the cost of switching between groups ends up being pretty high here. If I'm flipping between A and B, it's harder to hit the tab that I was on with this change. We should make sure the "last selected tab in the group" is clearly indicated graphically."

Moving to b9
Assigning this to Faaborg. Agreed that we should have stronger visual styling for the last selected tab in each group.

In addition to visually marking the last active tab, I wish you could provide a way to unequivocally open the last active tab without having to hunt the icon down with the mouse, maybe by double-clicking the tab-group header.
Trying this out on Lion, I'm seeing a focus ring around the last active tab. This seems like fairly clear indication. I'm going to mark fixed, and if this can be reproduced or manifests itself in other ways, feel free to reopen.
