A few minutes ago NAGIOS started throwing alerts and Michael Verdi noted the error: "Unable to connect to the database !"

I'll try to post more details in a bit.
yep.  one of them backed up, so we pulled it.  Turned out the other one wasn't in the pool to begin with.  oops.
