Users on build-vpn used to be able to access smtp.m.o (was fixed in bug#539483), but this stopped working last week. dmoore, ravi and myself brainstormed on thurs, and came up with allowing build-vpn to acces SJC DMZ as a way to fix this.

Just talked with Ravi; this is part-done so we should now be able to access munin f.e, but its not yet finished, so not yet able to access smtp.

This is different to the "Bug 604139 - Build VPN's DNS periodically unresponsive", so filing bug to track.

Removing smtp.m.o from /etc/hosts breaks this immediately.
Switching to smtp.m.c fixes this, at least for the moment.
I'm just using the default config for Thunderbird, which points to smtp.m.c.

From my terminal scrollback:

Trying 10.2.74.48...
^C
dustin@lorentz ~ $ telnet smtp.mozilla.com
Trying 63.245.209.12...
telnet: connect to address 63.245.209.12: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host
(and m.c would have worked if I'd added a port - I had just sent an email using Thunderbird)

I just tried this now, to confirm, and I see:

dustin@lorentz ~ $ telnet smtp.mozilla.org 25
Trying 63.245.208.213...
Connected to smtp.mozilla.org.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 dm-mail03.mozilla.org ESMTP Postfix
^]
telnet> quit
Connection closed.
dustin@lorentz ~ $ telnet smtp.mozilla.com 25
Trying 63.245.209.12...
telnet: connect to address 63.245.209.12: Connection refused
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host

which means that smtp.m.o works now, and smtp.m.c doesn't. Nert?

.com isn't really supported - it was there to support some Windows Mobile phones some time ago. And then, only port 465 is open.

mail.mozilla.com and smtp.mozilla.ORG should be what you use.

This is all split DNS related I'm sure.

This is what happens when you test as I've been working to fix it in the background.

DHS has been resolved to make this work. Check out Bug 604139 for details.
