We've got Firefox/Thunderbird download buttons to mozilla.org home page, but since they require smart platform/language detection, we've just got them linked to the respective product pages for now.

We need to either push the platform/language detection to the server side (so you can have a generic "download the latest Firefox for my platform/locale), or we need to use the product-details lib that we use on mozilla.com and do the same JS work on the mozilla.org home page.
Now that the new site is live we have some data on these buttons -- it looks like the Firefox button is being clicked on over 10,000 times a day (this number is from this weekend which is the first full days of the new design being live so weekday numbers could be higher).
Changing bug summary to make this more generic -- we'll want download buttons on more than just the home page. As of now, I think this will also be relevant to moving the mozilla.com pages to mozilla.org/firefox and potentially also to an upcoming campaign mini-site if it is hosted on mozilla.org instead of it's own domain.

For next steps, we should figure out who has the technical information about what needs to be done here.

10,000 sounds like a lot, but what percentage is that? How many total page views during the same period? How many total clicks on the page during the same period? If it's 10,000 out of a million page views, it wouldn't be as impressive.
On Sunday there were 67,214 visits to home page and 11,535 visits to the button (WebTrends counts the button as if it were a page). So 17% of the traffic to the home page clicked on the Firefox download button.
cc'ing alex and morgamic.

David, let us know how you want to proceed, i.e. "generic download the latest
Firefox for my platform/locale" button or mirror exactly how it's done on mozilla.com. Then we can work out the technical requirements.

We'd also need to figure out what to show if the user is running the latest
version of fx.
We already knew that learning about Firefox is the top reason for people going to mozilla.org - even though mozilla.org is not the main site for it. Also, the button is the only clickable thing in the large box about Firefox that makes up a major portion of the site, so it's understandable that many people click it.
Re comment #5, I think a simple 'Download Firefox - Free' and 'Download Thunderbird' button would work fine (if I need to open a separate bug for the Thunderbird button, let me know). So something along the lines of the button at

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html

For what to show if the user is running the latest version, I'll do whatever is considered best practice. The personal.html page seems to still show the download button, so maybe just leave it?

Re comment #6, I agree the numbers aren't surprising, but my main point about the stats is concern that a large number of people might not be downloading since right now they have to go through an extra click and page load to get to the actual install button.
David, I share that concern and fully agree that we should have a direct download button there - although we also should have some link to "Learn more about Firefox" or so - or just have the rest of the area of that promotion link to the Firefox (sub)site.
I just wanted to point out that it's expected that the button gets a lot of traffic, even more so when "Get Firefox" is the only way there to get to anything Firefox, including info.
We did have a 'Learn more' link in addition to the download button in the design but dropped it when the button just forwarded people to the site. We'll add that back in when the button serves downloads.
Mike Alexis, what are the next steps here? Do you have the information you need to sort out the technical requirements?
Closing old Mozilla.org website bugs due to them not being relevant to the new Python-based Bedrock system. Re-open if this is a critical bug and should be resolved on the new system too.

This is fixed for Firefox. Is Thunderbird still wanted?

The bug mentions both Firefox and Thunderbird because both were featured on the old home page. Now that we're only featuring Firefox, we only need the download button for Firefox.

The "Download Thunderbird" link in question isn't used on the page anymore.
