Note: I am using Thunderbird to access approx 8 email user accounts all from the same mail server. Two or three have multiple folders and sub folders plus these accounts has multiple message filters with large lists of message filtering criteria.

Most commonly observed in inbox folder.
Pressing button does not delete highlighted item or items.
Same for delete using drop menu delete using right click on item(s).

Note: The actions above will toggle items deleted count shown in status bar increments without apparent message deletion.

I haven't methodically characterized the problem yet but offer some observations. 

Sometimes if remote content has been blocked and I allow remote content to be viewed the messages becomes deletable.

SometimesI move to a different folder and then return to inbox messages becomes deletable.

Sometimes when message isn't deletable from mail toolbar it is deletable by right clicking on message(s) and selecting the delete option.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.No methodical attempts to reproduce. Only routine opening of client has been associated with this problem.

Does it work better if you start Thunderbird in -safe-mode().

Problem appears not to be with Thunderbird but with preloaded backup application that comes with most new Dell computers. WD Anywhere Backup product produced by Memeo Inc. when active intermittently locks files upon change of state during which deleting messages in Thunderbird produces the previously described behavior. As the backup software is currently the default load coming with most Dell PCs I'd expect others to experience similar behavior.

Sorry for not finding this earlier and wasting anyone's time if I did.
