from http://macweek.zdnet.com/2000/11/19/1121netscape6.html (by John C. Welch): But the worst offenses relate to keyboard equivalents. For example, in 4.7.x, you hit Cmd-/ to mark an e-mail message as read. In Netscape 6, you hit M--not Cmd-M (which is still "New Message") or Ctrl-M or even Opt-M. Just M. To mark all messages in a folder as read, you use the letter A. A user could thus accidently hit the letter "A" in a window, and mark all messages as read without wanting to. And considering that other e-mail clients allow you to use letters to quickly jump to other folders, the use of unmodified characters for program functions is mind-boggling in the potential for problems. [I have to agree that this seems very error prone especially for novice users. We should fix it by adding one or more modifiers *or* by removing the shortcuts altogether. Cmd-Shift-M/A?]
for the record, there are 5 additional single keypress keybindings defined for the mailnews window (in addition to the ones described above).

I may have a fix for this. What modifiers should we use? ctrl-shift? alt-shift? alt? UI/spec people: please comment.
I'm going to be so annoyed if I can't hit 'n' to go to the next message. 'm' /'a' are pretty destructive with no way of getting the old data back easily, so I can see the point. However, I'm pretty sure that we make it so that if you type in a form these keys don't perform any action so it's not too likely that the user will type these in the window. reassigning to sspitzer.

Currently the keybindings for Mark All Read is Ctrl+Shift+C, not single A any more.(I don't know if it is A before). So this bug is not very destructive now.
Lower Severity-->Normal since it is not as destructive as before.
Severity: major → normal
The introduction of 'J' to mark a message as Junk is an additional "destructive" shortcut to be addressed, if something is done for this bug. Personally, I'd rather see the Undo function extended to cover the changes wreaked by these keys, than to have the keys get modifiers.
Undo makes sense. note that J can be mostly countered by Shift-J.

MASS-CHANGE: This bug report is registered in the SeaMonkey product, but still has no comment since the inception of the SeaMonkey project 5 years ago. Because of this, we're resolving the bug as EXPIRED. If you still can reproduce the bug on SeaMonkey 2 or otherwise think it's still valid, please REOPEN it and if it is a platform or toolkit issue, move it to the according component.
