User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:2.0b6) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0b6 Build Identifier: 3.1.5 As soon Thunderbird is opens, the Focus of it lies nowhere. This leads Screenreaders wich are used for Blind people also nowhere. Easy Solution: As Soon thunderbird is stated, the first mail shall be marked correspondending to the sorting algorythm. So the focus lies in the Maillist window and the Screenreaders can speak right after start wich mails there are. Reproducible: Always
A addition: Same happens when a new mail is opend. Sometimes Thunderbird is focused at the mail content and the screenreader starts to read is sucesfully, sometimes it is focused on the emailadress of the sender. To check: Install Jaws 12 from freedom scientiffic. Its the most used screenreading software. In demo modus it will run 40 minutes each reboot. Defocus the mouse from your screen, somewhere on the borders. Then try starting/using Thunderbird with keyboard only.

It is correct that, when opening Thunderbird, the focus may not be anywhere, Shift+tabbing once brings it to the messages list for me. Note that I have the preview pane turned off. I cannot reproduce with new mail, it always lands in the message body for me, and I can read a message. When composing, I always land in the "To" field.
