From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; m18) Gecko/20001126 BuildID: 2000112620 When I open a web page in Internet Explorer, right-click a link in the web page and select "Copy Shortcut" from the menu that appears, then Paste that into Mozilla's address/location bar, the mozilla.exe process will not die when the browser is closed. The mere act of Pasting the shortcut to the address/location bar (either via right-click or CTRL-V or from the Edit menu) is sufficient...you need not hit Enter for the problem to exist. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1). Open Internet Explorer. 2). Access your favorite web site. 3). Right-click a link in the web page. 4). Select "Copy Shortcut" from the menu that appears. 5). Open Mozilla. 6). Paste the address into the address/location bar of Mozilla. 7). Close the Mozilla web browser window. Actual Results: The mozilla.exe process remains in memory after the web browser was closed. Expected Results: The mozilla.exe process should just unload. This was tested on Windows NT SP6a with Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 and Windows 2000 (no sp) with Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1. Various Mozilla builds since 10/26/2000 (up to 2000112620) have been tested and found affected. Windows 98 was also tested but mozilla.exe unloaded normally, so this may be restricted to NT/2000. ============== When the Mozilla browser is closed, mozilla.exe consumes all processor power for a few seconds (AMD K6 333Mhz) then unloads. When this bug is exploited, however, mozilla.exe consumses the processor like it normally does but doesn't unload afteword and sits idle. ============== Additionally, trying to open Mozilla while the dormant mozilla.exe process is still in memory produces the following error: mozilla.exe - Application Error The instruction at "0x60d0e4e5" referenced memory at "0x002f6538". The memory could not be "read". Once OK'd, Mozilla opens normally when tried again. However, the bug still exists in subsequent Mozilla processes.
confirmed with 112704 mozilla build on NT. Strange clipboard behavior. Over to Toolkit for investigation.

interesting bug report! I can't reproduce this on Win98 though, so ->pinkerton for further triage

does this still happen with ie6? my guess is that there's some weird os bug here, since it works in 98, and works with every other app, right? it it just IE that causes this? all we're doing is pasting regular text. does it only happen when you copy a shortcut? does it also happen when you just select text in a webpage? pushing off.
Target Milestone: mozilla0.9.9 → mozilla1.2
With current mozilla trunk, and IE5.5 on win2k, I cannot reproduce this failure to exit mozilla.exe. The app quits normally for the steps to reproduce above. [Note: the original bug report is for IE5.5 as well, not IE6.0].

Haven't looked at this in quite a while. Hmm...in attempts to reproduce this again, tested mozilla 0.6 and 0.7, both of which has this problem, but 0.8, 0.8.1 and 0.9 do not. Didn't test other versions, but I'm guessing this was probably fixed indirectly back in 0.8. Someone want to verify and close?
-> WFM (tested with 1.6 on Win2k)
