This might be valuable for drawing directly to gl surfaces.
I experimented with this a while ago, and it was less than stellar. Performance wasn't any faster than a normal bitmap context, and in many cases was slower. However, that was a while ago, and we weren't using GL ourselves -- so it's worth looking at creating GL contexts again.
It looks like CGIOSurfaceContextCreate is what we're going to want to use here. Webkit uses it through WKIOSurfaceContextCreate to get accelerated canvas on Lion
