User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.2.6) Gecko/20100625 Firefox/3.6.6
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.2.12) Gecko/20101027 Thunderbird/3.1.6

If You type in the wrong password for retrieving Your mail, the password input box for Your second attempt is not automatically focused.
Now typing some characters without recognizing this starts several unexpected actions of thunderbird (which in some cases were difficult to undo).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start thunderbid.
2. Type a wrong password in the password input box, press enter.
3. Click [ok] in the warnings message box that appears.
4. Try to type some characters in the password input box (without clicking in it before).

Actual Results:
No characters appear in the password box.
Instead a lot of unexpected things happen on the screen, e. g. new tabs are opened, older messages are opened or appear in other colours, ...

Expected Results:
Focus the password box and accept the typed characters as password without having to click in it before.
Typing in normal strings (with letters like a, b, c, ...) should not allow programs to start actions. This should only happen if You type in special key combinations (e. g. with contol keys like [ctrl], [alt], ...).

1.
I won't tell You my passwords. Some characters may cause no effects at all, but special combinations perhaps may produce serious actions. Therefor I don't know which level of severity should be chosen.
2.
I can't speak english very well. Reading all bug reports concerning "password" makes this bug reporting procedure a top 100 time killer.

I'm getting focus with Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.5; rv:2.0b8pre) Gecko/20101202 Thunderbird/3.3a2pre.

Does it work better if you start Thunderbird in -safe-mode (http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode) ?

No, there is no difference using thunderbird in -safe-mode.

I found this bug using win-XP.
It probably will not appear under Mac OS, as it doesn't appear under Ubuntu Linux 10.04 or win7 neither.

There must be two or more mail accounts under thunderbird to reproduce the bug. Mistyping the password for one account and clicking [ok] in the warnings message box that appears opens the password input box for the next account which is not focused. Typing any characters now without clicking in the input box before leads to the above mentioned strange behavier of thunderbird.
The bug appears in win7, too.
