When I was testing Firefox 4 beta 7 on my Mac, I saw the About Mozilla link on about:home was pointing to mozilla.com/about instead of to mozilla.org/about.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start Firefox b4.7
2. Click on About Mozilla link at the bottom of the page

Actual Results:
The link is pointing to http://www/mozilla.com/about

Expected Results:
The link should point to http://www.mozilla.org/about/?WT.mc_id=fxhome&WT.mc_ev=click

This About Mozilla link on the current start page is pointing to mozilla.org. Plus the mozilla.com/about page will no longer exist after the mozilla.com site is moved to mozilla.org/firefox early next year.

Note that the link to mozilla.org/about above has some tagging on it that is different from the tagging on the About Mozilla link at google.com/firefox -- that is old Urchin tagging that is being replaced with WebTrends tagging.
This is consistent with our overall plans for the website, btw.
I guess this should block final if we are going to point to a wrong (or even missing) page.

unless comment 1 is saying the opposite, clarify please?
To clarify, this applies to the en-US version of about:home page only.

Re question in comment #2, we could always set up a redirect after the mozilla.com/about page is moved (which we are planning to do before the Firefox 4 release) but we'd like to avoid unneeded redirects.

We don't currently localize that link - we link to the same page for all locales. Do we need to change that? We can include a locale code in the link, but relying on the website redirecting based on accept-lang (or whatever it wants to use) is much simpler...
The current Google hosted start page does have different links for About Mozilla. Compare:

http://www.google.com/firefox

http://www.google.de/firefox

http://www.google.es/firefox

We will have the mozilla.org About Mozilla page localized soon, but not in time for the Firefox 4 launch.

If the About Mozilla link in about:home stats mozilla.org/about for all locales, it may be possible to handle redirects to the correct pages on mozilla.org (even if the localized pages aren't hosted there right now). CC'ing Alex about that -- I'm never done redirects based on accept-lang.

Taking that patch will significantly affect the l10n-friendliness of this link - mozilla.com is set up to redirect based on locale, while mozilla.org is not. It's not clear to me that we should make this change until mozilla.org has some basic l10n support.
At this point, I don't think this is blocking. Also, we should change the link when we have content. I'm not sure that offering different content for en-US and for all other languages is a good idea, too. And the language on mozilla.com/about is vastly different from what's on mozilla.org/about.

Also, this seems to be a much bigger cake, http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/search?string=mozilla.com/ lists a lot of false positives, but also a ton of links to www.mozilla.com that are in use. Like privacy policy, panorama about, phishing example page, and more. Many of those are likely also in 3.0 and 3.6 versions out there.
sounds to me like there's a lot more to figure out before we can change the link.

Does this still block?
When I filed the bug our thinking was that the mozilla.com -> mozilla.org/firefox transition was going to happen before the Firefox 4 release. It looks like it will happen after the release now, so changing this link shouldn't block. The bug is still valid though and we should make this change at some point.
excellent! Thank you.

patch

Clearing this request - need more l10n support on mozilla.org before this can land.

It looks to me like we can make this change now - http://www.mozilla.org/about/ does proper locale detection AFAICT.
we actually already did this in bug 731546.

Ehr, not completely, we are lacking the params from comment 0

David, may you confirm we still need to add "?WT.mc_id=fxhome&WT.mc_ev=click"?

I don't think this is still relevant.
