This issue has been happening to me over the last several weeks so I am now reporting since it is happening consistently, but not every time I update.
STR:
1. Perform an update to the latest Fennec nightly. In the case of this bug I was updating from 20101128 to 20101129.
2. I download the update, but while downloading my phone freezes.
3. When I finally am able to unfreeze the phone, when I try to start Fennec I simply get a black screen.
4. I go into Settings and force stop the application.
5. After doing Step 4 and then launching Fennec again, I get the dialog asking me to apply the update, which I am able to do and then everything goes fine.
At the time of updating, no other apps are running on the phone. Doorhanger notifications are enabled for both Yahoo and GMail.

has anyone seen this since bug 616078 landed (12/3 nightly or later)?

marcia, can you give it a try again on post 12/3 builds? Report back if you do with another set of repro steps and observations if you see it.

I am having trouble installing the update today. Here are my STR:
1. I receive the doorhanger notification and download the latest nightly.
2. I get the prompt to "get the new version"
2. I apply the update, and then all that shows is a black screen with the fennec icon at the top. Pressing on this does nothing.
3. I exit, and I have to restart the process all over again. I repeated and followed the STR again and the same thing happened.

Similar events happen on my Milestone during he update process, except ultimately I experience a crash after visibly seeing a black screen (bug 609293), for what it's worth the two might be related.

did you install the update via the android notification pull down? Could these issues here be related to notification?

Notification, yes

Yes, and I installed using the notifications as well. I showed mwu my steps yesterday.

I've seen this before also. After choosing the notification it loads Fennec and goes to a black screen and just hangs, and if I hit back and home a couple times it'll eventually prompt me to force-close. When I run Fennec again from the launcher icon it runs the installer and updates.
I haven't seen it do the above in 4 or 5 days though. What I have seen in the last few days is when I choose the notification to install it, I'll get a crash reporter screen from Fennec, saying it's reporting a crash. I choose to restart and then it runs the installer.

I haven't seen this lately while either using the nightlies or B3.

nightly updates have been broken for a week and b3 doesn't have the updater. Were you seeing this in a non-update situation?

After Comment 12, I don't recall seeing the issue in nightlies up to the point that I started using and testing Beta 3. I just reinstalled the nightly after using B3.
My experiences with the black screen were all related to updating. So when the nightlies resume I will see if it manifests itself again.
