Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Go to Prefernces ->Mail and newsgroup->window settings->Unchekc the box Double clicking on th mail opens the mail in a new message window 2.Open browser the mail window 3.Select and account and a mail folder 4.Double click on the mail. Actual Results: The mail will be opened in a message window. Expected Results: The message window for the mail shoudl notbe openend till you right click on the mail and from the Right mouse click->Open message is not done.
This was a conscious decision in 6.0, don't know yet what will be implemented for 6.5.

I have tested this on Netscape 6 for windows and the problem seems to be there.
This should't be a pref? It's a common behaviour among all known emailapplications I know of. Why would one want to turn it off? I can't figure out a good reason.
If you double-click on a message, you're asking for it to open in a new window. I don't see the point of a pref either.
Oh, wait, I remember what this pref is for. And it's not what the reporter said it was for. Steps to reproduce: 1. Double-click on message A. 2. Double-click on message B. What is expected: * If `Double-clicking a message opens it in a new window' is unchecked, message B opens in the same standalone window, replacing message A. * If `Double-clicking a message opens it in a new window' is checked, message B opens in a different standalone window, so both A and B are open. It's a badly-worded pref in 4.x. We probably need radio buttons to explain it clearly: | | When opening a message in its own window, use: | (*) a new window | ( ) an existing window | | (If multiple messages are opened at once, they will always open in new | windows.) We need the same thing for Navigator, see bug 35578.

Ah, that makes sense! :) Nominating for mozilla 0.9.
Keywords: mozilla0.9
It is a good idea but it's not going to be scheduled for 0.9 unless someone else takes it. Reassigning to sspitzer.

making this work would probably help us lower footprint for standalone message window users who took advantage of this.

I'm going to mark this a dup of 110556 because the newer bug has a patch associated with it. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 110556 ***
