firefox sync has spat it does boot up and it shows me that the server may have problems

Please enable logging (set the services.sync.log.appender.debugLog.enabled preference to true in about:config) and attach Sync logs (about:sync-log).
Actually, I just saw you reported this on 2010-12-03. The cluster was upgraded that day and subsequently ran into some problems. Should be all fixed by now.
