I just encountered this while attempting to download the add-on Fire Query through the AOM in the build Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:2.0b8pre) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/4.0b8pre I don't really have any steps to reproduce other than I encountered this error in the UI. I was unable to try again, as searching for the add-on brings returns me to the same message dialog in its row. The workaround was to close and re-open the Add-ons Manager. Attached is a screenshot of what I saw.

In such a case you should have enabled extension logging. I assume that you haven't checked the Error Console? The UI doesn't show the in-detail failures. We could only block on bugs we can reproduce.

Comment on attachment 495010 [details] Add-on 'Error Downloading' Dialup add-on failed to download and produced a loop giving the following two messages in a cycle: - (This is a Windows platform) The update could not be installed. Please make sure that there no other copies of Firefox running on your computer, and then restart Firefox to try again. OK (I don't see any other versions of FF running so how can I stop them?) (As soon as I click OK there is a short pause before thie next panel appears saying: -) Firefox update Firefox is installing your updates and will start in a few minutes (This panel disappears and is replaced by the first one again.) (f I try to start Firefox between the cycle I get the error message in a panel: -) C:\Program files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe (X) Another program is currently using this file. Followed protocol advised by Josep de Rio who suggested the following: - "hat I would try first: hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to invoke the Task Manager, click on the "Processes" tab, then click on the "Image Name" column header to sort the processes by name. Locate any "firefox.exe" entries, select them one by one and then click on "End Process". This appears to be a Firefox problem; the fact that it happened while updating Speed Dial is a coincidence." This proc did not solve the problem. So I am effectively in a loop of some kind and I cannot start Firefox. I tried downloading another firefox copy but I was prevented by a "Windows DEP issue which stopped the installer. So I am stuck. I cannot use Firefox which I have used for years now and I may have lost my bookmarks and personal preferences, etc. IE is not a patch on Firefox. This Loop is continuing all the time!!! I am now using IE but all my personalised FF data is not available to me. My bookmarks menu has been greatly reduced so I am missing a large number of recently visited sites which I cannot access. I do a lot of research and I need this problem correcting a.s.a.p.
Joe Boylan, I think unfortunately you're referencing another bug. The issue this bug is referencing is another issue in recent nightly builds of Firefox.
