In https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=592685 I asked for a promo to be built for the beta to go out with 3.6.13.

With the new redesign coming next week, we need to tone down the old promo to fit the new site style.

You can find the old promo here:http://people.mozilla.org/~lmesa/Firefox%204%20Beta%20Campaign/

Look under what's new.

The promo should say
"Experience Firefox 4 The future of the Web is waiting for you! Join the Beta Program."

It would be cool to stick with the same theme, but maybe find an interesting way to cut out one of the shapes in the original illustrations or something like that. Ideally this promo would go out with the redesign, but I understand if it can't make it.

Lee, we could use your help with this. The basic task is to take the original Fx4 beta promo described in comment #0 and reformat to fit within the lower right promo area on this page:
http://nova.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.6.12/whatsnew/

If you hit refresh a few times, you'll notice that the promos on the lower left are all toned down versions of what's on the current live What's New page. This one should follow that direction.

We need to get this one done as soon as you can. Thanks!

Thanks Lee. I'm not really loving the under-construction element from the illustration. It's hard to tell what it is out of context. I'd suggest putting a regular Fx logo there, but that would be a lot of logos on the page. Maybe change the background color a bit? Or use the Fx4 wordmark?

Also, we can put this promo over in the far right slot rather than the left.

Yeah, I agree that it's difficult to use those painted sci-fi elements w/out using the total piece...

How's this:

Hi Lee-

I think this is headed in the right direction. The "Firefox 4" feels a bit high in the box. Could we make the "Join the Beta Program" orange, or is that straying from the design of the new page too much?

This is definitely going in the right direction. I wouldn't make the button orange though. Agreed that the headline area could still use a little tweaking.

Makes sense--I just worry that it lacks a certain "je ne said quoi" that easily allows it to fade a bit too much into the background....

Breaking news - Lee, we're actually going to be switching this promo to the *main* content window. So, hold off on what you're doing for now...I'll be posting some new copy soon, but it sounds like this is going to be pretty different.

Might be an opportunity to add more of the illustration, or it might be best to continue the darker blue background you have now. Be thinking about what would look better. Either way, we'll have more copy than the current one you've been working on does.

Thanks!

Yeah, those are going in the right direction, but comment #8 sort of resets things. Stay tuned...

Lee, here's the new copy. It seems to sort of point in the direction of using the illustration, but I'm not sure if that would be too much (or make the page too heavy). What do you think?

head: Browse into the Future!
subhead:Be one of the first to try out the Firefox 4 Beta.

body:
- Awesomely fast
- Brand new look
- Lots of new features

CTA button: Join the Firefox 4 Beta Program

Slight copy update to the subhead...should now read:

Be one of the first to test and give feedback on Firefox 4 Beta.

It would be nice to put Firefox 4 Beta logo in the area w/ the bullets. There's so many doo-dads flying all around this page. Anyway we can trim down some of the Fx$ Beta content, or reduce the size of the RYFF dot and Newletter envelope?

Thanks Lee. I think this is coming along well.

For one thing, the only promo in that lower left slot is going to be Firefox Live. If you go to http://nova.stage.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.6.12/whatsnew/ you can see what that looks like (you may have to refresh a few times, but the other promos will be pulled out for launch...I'll also attach an image). That ought to reduce the visual clutter on the page a bit.

As for the text area, it does feel a bit overcrowded. Laura/Mayumi - any recommendations on what we should cut, if anything? I could live with the Fx4 Beta logo where it is, fwiw.

Also, two really small nits:
* change "Lots of" to "Tons of"
* make sure there's a space in "Beta Program" in the button

Yep. Having the Firefox Live promo on the lower left does help. Changes made to v04:

What if we put "Browse into the future" on one of the transparent backgrounds we've used on the Beta WN pages and put it over part of the image? That could help cut down on the words...

I also agree with lee that it would be nice to have Fx 4 somewhere in the right hand section of the promo--maybe we scale down the image and make the text area a tad bigger?

Not to waffle on Fx4 logo, but I'm starting to think that it helps context by coupling the painting with the logo. I'm a little bit hesitant to alter the layout (transparent background over the painting) because composing over the ships and FF globe-in-progress will present it's own problems...

Basically, it's starting to work for me... thoughts?

Hehe--ok, whatever you suggest--you're the artiste ;)

Do you think unitalicizing "Be one of the first..." could help reduce the noise? Otherwise, I like how the logo looks.

I think this looks pretty good as is, actually.
