Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.2.12) Gecko/20101026 Firefox/3.6.12 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.2.12) Gecko/20101027 Lightning/1.0b2 Thunderbird/3.1.6 Now and then I noticed that, when I clicked on a new message in the Inbox, I got another message in the display; often the message that was displayed was a message I received a couple of days earlier from LinkedIn. I didn't take the time to investigate or file a bug report because it happened only now and then. Today however, I have the same problem with _all_ messages in one of my folders (not the Inbox folder). The folder contents is shown correctly, but whenever I click on a message, I each time get the same message (one message that is in that same folder), no matter which message I retrieve. This is true for both header and contents. I thought it might be something with caching or something that would be still in memory or whatever. So I first stopped Thunderbird and restarted it. Problem persisted. Then I shut down my system (full shutdown) and started again. It did not solve the problem. I still get that same (one) message, no matter which of the messages in this folder I choose (there are 1492 messages in that folder). I use IMAP to retrieve the message from a Sun Java System Messaging Server 7.0 update 3 system. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start Thunderbird. 2. Select folder 'XYZ' 3. Double-click on a message, no matter which message. Actual Results: I each time get the same message (see below for the message raw contents). Expected Results: I would expect to see each time a different message when I double-click on different messages in that folder. When looking at the source by using 'View Source' I get a window, with in it the headers and contents of ALL messages in that folder! Today I can't get access to these messages in this folder, because I get each time one (wrong) message. Hence I have selected below that it is a Major problem.

This is true for both header and contents. Call the folder XYZ as you did. Is XYZ offline-use=on folder? (Folder Properties, Synchronization) If yes, check content of file named ...\XYZ(not ...\XYZ.msf. if subfolder of ABC, file named ...\ABC.sbd\XYZ) by text editor. Is shown mail data by mail click placed at offset=0(top of file) of the file named ...\XYZ? (i.e. same phenomenon as Bug 501851 ?) I so, keep back up of ...\XYZ and ...\XYZ.msf first for future analysis. Then open Activity Manager window via Tools menu, do "Repair Folders" at Folder Properties/General of XYZ, and wait for completion of auto-sync of XYZ(download all mail data to offline-store=...\XYZ). Is correct mail data shown after aove operation? Is correct mail data shown?

Answers: Folder Properties, Synchronization shows offline-use=on And yes, examining this file, this specific message (that is displayed for every message) is at offset=0 (top of file) of this XYZ file! Then I did a Repair Folders for this folder and waited for the sync to complete. After the sync was completed, I opened a number of messages in this folder and each of them was diplayed properly! So to answer your question: yes, the correct mail data is shown after this operation. Excuse me for not knowing about this Repair function. I wonder now: was this a bug?

(In reply to comment #2) > I wonder now: was this a bug? If Bug 501851 occurs in your environment, phenomenon of Bug 501851 occurs in your environment too. So, phenomenon you saw may be same as Bug 501851. But we can't say that problem of Bug 501851 surely happened on you, because no one can know whether phenomenon you saw was produced by Bug 501851 or not, since no data for problem analysis is provided. (Who can provide such data after problem happened?) However, "phenomenon you saw"(==same as phenomenon of Bug 501851) was apparently produced by some real bugs of Tb. Tb is not designed to show such result. Wrong mail data at wrong position in offline-store should not be used as data for a mail at any place/any time. So, phenomenon you saw can be called "real BUG of Tb", even if it's relevant to other software's unexpected/unwanted access to files which Tb uses. Do you permit "interfere of Tb's access to Tb's file by other application such as anti-virus software or auto-backup software" in your environment? Anyway, as same external phenomenon as Bug 501851, duping to that bug. To bug opener: Re-open this bug if duping is wrong. Even if duping is correct, that bug is based on crated test case. Example in real environment is valuable. Please add comment about your real environment or add data for what really happened in your environment, please.

WADA, thanks a lot for your analysis and answer. Thunderbird as I use it here cannot suffer from interference from a virus scanner (no virus scanner running on this MacOSX box) nor from a backup software solution. However, what is possible is, that the search indexer software (Spotlight) is busy indexing/opening/reading files and that this causes interference. Again, thanks.

Re-opening in order not to loose real case, as other cases are kept open.

There's no one active here so I don't see value in keeping this open as a separate testcase, unless you do wada.
