The problem also occurs in Thunderbird 2; in 3.x, right-clicking and choosing Open In Browser has the same effect. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open email with ftp link 2. Click the link 3. Choose Save from your browser, if applicable Actual Results: File is created but is 0 bytes long, i.e. is not downloaded Expected Results: Would expect the file to be downloaded and saved.
If I correctly understand Tb's behavior on FTP: link of HTML mail(or may be on linkified string by Tb of FTP:... in text mail too), Tb merely passes the url of "FTP:..." to program who is registered to system(Windows registry entry for protocol handler of FTP: if Win) as protocol handler of FTP: protocol. In you case, as file path used is next, the final protocol handler of the passed FTP: URL looks IE(IE 5 in your case). > C:/Users/userid/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/Content.IE5/CV8D4BGW/thunderbird-3.1.6-3.1.7.partial%5B5%5D.mar Phenomenon you see is next, isn't it? (i.e. issue in your IE) 1. Tb passes the next FTP: link to OS or your IE, according to your Windows registry setting for FTP: protocol. > ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/3.1.7/update/win32/en-US/thunderbird-3.1.6-3.1.7.partial.mar 2. Your OS passes the FTP: link to your IE, according to your Windows registry setting for FTP: protocol. 3. Your IE tries to save data of the passed FTP: link in next file. > C:\Users\useridAppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\CV8D4BGW\thunderbird-3.1.6-3.1.7.partial.mar 4. But somehow file size of it is ZERO. 5. Your IE tries to pass the file via. file: URL to an external application, based on file extention of ".mar" or Content-Type: returned from the FTP server(escaped format because of file: URL). > file:///C:/Users/userid/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Windows/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/Content.IE5/CV8D4BGW/thunderbird-3.1.6-3.1.7.partial%5B5%5D.mar If it's right, Tb can be relevant to step 1 only(Tb simply passes the FILE: URL). How can Tb be relevant to file at step 3 or file: URL at step 5, which is generate by your IE?
Well, the issue occurs even if Firefox is set as the ftp handler, and it gets the same localized "files://" path. I even cheated and wrote a little Winbatch that captures the URL passed to it by Windows, used it as the ftp handler, and it reports the same "file://" path, so it would seem that Thunderbird is doing something with Windows to pass that path to *whatever* application is registered for ftp.
Can you get Process Monitor log for access to the created file(size=0)? Who created the file? > http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb545027.aspx > http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645 > Filter : Path contains \thunderbird-3.1.6-3.1.7.partial, Include
The first FileCreate I see is thunderbird.exe, followed by the selected ftp application (either iexplore.exe or firefox.exe.) Logs for both are attached.
Correction: logs for both were too large (even zipped), so can be found on http://www.slosh.com/tbird/ftp-via-firefox.zip http://www.slosh.com/tbird/ftp-via-ie.zip Let me know if the logs aren't formatted correctly or you want other|less|more info in them.

These are nolonger available, and I doubt anyone had looked at them. If you still see this problem when using a current version, please reopen the bug report with a new log.
