I've tried Mozilla and Netscape 6 for Linux (I run RedHat 6.2 on Intel) with
both Gnome 1.2 and KDE 2.0.  From the moment I run Mozilla many of my desktop
tools are hosed.  With Gnome the problem is minor--I cannot run the Gnome
configuration tools (not the one in the panel or any in the 'Settings' menu).
With KDE, the problem is more drastic--many of the utilities no longer run!  I
cannot print from kedit, the print tool won't open, etc.  When I attempt kedit's
File->Open I get an error and, though the window opens, nothing displays.  The
only way to clear the errors is to quit X and restart.

Heres the error message I get on a gnome application *after* running mozilla.
Some application will display after this, some won't.  (My KDE error also
mentions network problems, saying it can't reach a process that I can see is
still running):

$ gedit handy_commands.txt
_IceTransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111

GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to session manager:
Could not open network socket.

Hrm, we'll need much more info on this.

- Are you running X as root?
- What applications and services are running before, during and after mozilla
runs? (ps axu)
- Exactly what applications don't work as expected? What are the errors and what
do you see on screen?
- What version of XF86 are you running?
- Where did you install mozilla to? /usr/local/mozilla, or your home directory?
and what permissions are there?
- Do mozilla or N6 give any errors? If so, paste them here.
- What Internet connection do you have? Is it always up? Does it work before
running Mozilla, during and afterwards?

Please use a recent Mozilla nightly to check these things.

FWIW I'm running GNOME 1.2 with a Moz nightly with no problems.

RH6.2 w/ KDE2:
Files open and print OK using Text Editor (KEdit) while moz is running.
Tried twice, closing KEdit afterwards each time. Using an old SJ-48 inkjet type
printer.

If you mean "printtool" (common linux LP config tool) - i had no prob's with
that either. Reconfigured printer while moz was running, without errors.

those errors look like networking issues, is mozilla connecting to any site
while you are seeing this?

I've installed Mozilla on my RedHat 6.2 at home and I don't get this!

But, at work where the problem is, I've done some more digging.  When I run
Mozilla (it oepns my home page, a page on this same Linux server), it
immediately removes the file pointed at by my SESSION_MANAGER environment
variable.  Witness:

$ echo $SESSION_MANAGER

Before running Mozilla

ls -al /tmp

and

After running mozilla

$ ls -la /tmp/.ICE-unix
total 4
drwxrwxrwt    2 root     root         1024 Dec 13 16:03 .
drwxrwxrwt   40 root     root         3072 Dec 13 16:03 ..

Obviously 18435 is a temporary socket reference of some kind and, sure enough,
its the PID of my gnome-session.

So why is Mozilla eating it?

I'm experiencing similar problems. While I'm running Mozilla, Gnome apps (e.G.
gtop, GnomeICU) don't start. If I try to start them, nothing happens - the
programs simply aren't displayed.

Immediately after I quit Mozilla, the programs I tried to start while it was
running suddenly all pop up at once.

I'm running Debian 2.2 (potato) with a self-compiled Xfree86 4.01 (which
otherwise works without any problems at all). The Gnome version is the one that
came with Debian 2.2.

Oh yeah there's one thing I forgot to mention - this problem doesn't always
occur when trying to start Gnome/Gtk apps, but often enough to be extremely
annoying :)
