View settings: Layout=Classic. Folders=All. Sort By Subject>Ascending>Unthreaded. Threade=All.
Clicking the Subject column heading to toggle sort order does not change the sort to Ascending. Original post is below replies.
Selecting Sort By> Ascending or Descending does not change the sort order. Original post remains below replies.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Click on the Subject column header to toggle sort order.
2.
3.
Actual Results:
Sort order remains Descending. Original post is below replies.
Expected Results:
Sort order should change to place the original post above all replies.
Sorting by Subject works as expected in V2.0.0.24.

Note the orientation of the indicator in V3.1.7.

Do you get the same results in -safe-mode (http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode) ?
>Sort order should change to place the original post above all replies.
Why should that be you are sorting by subject not by date ?

Yes, same results in safe mode.

Because... that's the way it's always worked?
I see no reason Subject can't be ascending or descending. It was in v1.x and v2.x.
Thanks for looking at it.

fwiw, Mike Easter on the m.s.thunderbird NG pointed out that Subject will sort ascending if one first changes the Date sort order to ascending.
Not ideal but it works...

More on this workaround.
If one sorts by subject without first sorting by date, the sort for that subject is hosed until another topic is selected and sorted Date>Subject.
Then we can go back to the original subject post, sort by date, then subject.
