In the message pane and Mail message window, the scroll bar has only one arrow
on both ends even if other panes and browser window have two arrows at each end
for scrolling.
This is related to bug 16277, bug 61826, but different.

Another window that does not follow the smartscroll settings is JS console window.

This might be a CAPS problem, see my remarks in bug 61826.

Another window that does not follow the smartscroll settings is view source
window (on build 20010823 the JS console window DOES follow the smartscroll
settings)

This bug affects Mac OS X too. Build 2001092905 on Mac OS X 10.1.
I think this should be moved to Security and mstoltz. It's at least closely
related, if not a dupe of bug 61826. As noted in comment 17 in bug 61826,
enabling JS in Mail/News fixes this. The security manager seems to be stopping
the load of the scrollbar binding. cc'ing Pinkerton as he offered Mitch a 6-pack
in the other bug.
Update:
With the new "native widgets" in classic on OS X, this bug causes more trouble
than ever. The scrollbar is now properly *rendered* with both scroll arrows on
the bottom, but it responds to button clicks as if the up arrow were on the top!
This is a serious UI glitch now.
wow, you're right. this is bad.

requesting re-triage. this makes the scrollbar in the message pane unusable in
the mac classic skin.

:-)

I've been told this isn't as bad as being described in this bug. Jennifer, can
you comment on this?
the problem is that the ui shows arrows, and there aren't really any arrows
there in the xul, so you can end up scrolling by a screen or more when you meant
to scroll by a line. the reverse could be true too.

does it kill your grandmother? no. it is confusing to users? very.
A sort of workaround from comment#25 of bug 74688:
------- Additional Comment #25 From Peter Van der Beken 2001-11-08 15:14 -------

Enabling JS in Mail/News makes the problem go away (and bug 62466 goes away too
then). This is related to 61826, the security manager seems to stop the load of
the scrollbar bindings.
If you disable js in the browser, do you see the same thing in the browser?
Yes, disabling JS in the browser causes scrollbars to not follow appearance
settings in the browser too.
I have to add to the list of scroll bars with this problem, the vertical and
horizontal scroll bars in the Print Preview window. Needless to say, there is
not way to enable JS for that window.
Discussed in 2/25 Mail/news bug mtg with Marketing PjM and Engineering.
Decision was to change product from mail news to browser make the component XP
Toolkit/Widgets. Have to to that in two steps; sorry for excess mail.

As of the 2002-04-25-03 build, this bug worksforme in the Classic theme.
Hooray! It's still incorrect in the Modern theme, but in my opinion this
improvement makes this bug no longer critical, as per my comment #9 above.

Same bug in the composer
Mac OS 9.1 build 2002072308
in bug 159714 (Marked duplicate of this one) i have signaled an other curious
thing in the java script console. I don't know if there is a relation.
Today i found the same in mozilla help

Some times only one arrow is shown on a scroll bar.
It is an inversion somewhere between vertical and horizontal. When the page is
wide enought to contain all the text in witdth, the horizontal scroll bar is
deleted, this is normal, but one arrow of the vertical scroll bar is also
deleted. It also true for a very hight page, in this case one arrow of the
horizontal scroll is deleted.

Have i to submit a new bug ?
