I'm developing an addon which lets users search for terms in Thunderbird, and so using the same search engine service as Firefox seems like a good idea.

Blake's patch wasn't quite enough - it didn't include the new files in the manifest. This we're wanting for 3.3a2 to allow experimentation with add-ons. AFAICT there is no knock-on effect the code seems pretty much standalone and doesn't come with any UI, so extensions can do the work until we land something in core that uses it.
