I came across this recently and asked Laura Forrest about it since she knows more about Google results than I do. Laura, any thoughts or recommendations to fix this?

Alright -- well, I have comments in bug 629787 on how to fix this. Two options: 1. submit an updated sitemap to google 2. generate a sitemap and link to it properly for search engines in robots.txt #2 is the correct way to fix it, but following that by doing #1 would speed up the fix on google's side before they slurp up the updated sitemap.xml.

As I said in bug 629787, we can't really change those links. But we can remove links in the Google Webmaster Tools. http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=47334
Summary: google search for "mozilla" returns firefox 3.0 and 3.1 in sitemap → google search for "mozilla" returns firefox 3.0 and 3.1 in sitelinks

In this case removing those links or giving them a low priority and submitting a new site map will help things. Since this is for .org I can work with Boswell to do this, but am moving this to the 1.3 release since 1.2 code freeze is tomorrow.
Target Milestone: 1.2 → 1.3

Getting ownership of mozilla.org on Google webmaster tools is easy. You need to "add the site" in the interface and then upload an HTML file that Google provides to verify ownership. After that, the owner can add other owners using email adresses tied to a Google account. I can't do that cause I don't have write access to mozilla.org.

Re comment #6, Anthony, I'm happy to vouch for you to get access to mozilla.org or I can add those files myself.

Wait... why is this not a dupe of bug 629787? Don't/Won't they serve the same purpose?

Site verified on Google Webmaster Tools with r84630 and r84631. I've blocked the 3.0 and 3.1 sitelinks. We just have to wait for Google to update them now.

Oh and if someone wants access to the Webmaster Tools, send me a mail with a google account email.

Can we add a link to "Download Firefox 4" on the sitemap? Right now, its a 2+ step process to download firefox when user searches for "mozilla"

Again, we do not control this list and it has nothing to do with sitemaps. The only concrete thing we can do is remove some sitelinks through Google Webmaster Tools. We can also do some SEO work to try to promote some stuff, but this is beyond my area of expertise and there are no guaranteed results afaict.
