Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101206 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.13
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101208 Thunderbird/3.1.7
The SENT folder in the left window-pane does not display emails. I am forced to go to the subfolders to see any Sent emails. By contrast all other parent-folders (e.g., Inbox, Drafts, Trash) display an aggregate view of what emails exist in their subfolders when I click on the parent-folder.
In the left window-pane of Thunderbird, these folders appear (the + denotes the folder is exandable):
+Inbox
+Drafts
+Sent
+Trash
If I click the + I can expand the folder and select individual email accounts. But if I select the "parent folder" I get to see the emails from ALL subfolders. The bug is that clicking the parent-folder for SENT does not show any emails even when emails are present in the subfolders.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.open two accounts, each with a different domain (e.g., bob@hotmail.com and tim@yahoo.com)
2.send an email from each of the two accounts
3.click on the parent-folder for SENT
4.no emails are present
5.click the + next to the parent-folder and click the subfolder representing each account (i.e., bob@hotmail.com and tim@yahoo.com). The sent emails appear.
Actual Results:
no emails are present in the parent-folder for SENT.
Expected Results:
All the sent emails that were sent (i.e., from each account I have) should be aggregated and appear here.

Any error messages in Tools -> Error console ?
Can you try with Thunderbird being launched in safemode (see http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode) ?
Summary: Sent-Folder never displays emails; only the subfolders display emails → Sent-Folder never displays emails; only the subfolders display emails unified folder

Hello, I have the same problem. I have two computers with different hardware, different software history, and different software installed in the moment. However, they have the same operating system (Ubuntu 10.10 64bit) and the same Thunderbird version: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.14) Gecko/20110223 Thunderbird/3.1.8. Only one of them has the problem.
Starting Thunderbird in Safe Mode does not solve the issue.

Sebatian, can you take a spin through this list and tell us if something matches?? Note, unified folders are basically virtual folders/saved searches
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?type0-0-4=anywordssubstr&type1-0-0=substring&field0-0-0=short_desc&type0-0-1=substring&field0-0-1=short_desc&field2-0-0=short_desc&field0-0-4=short_desc&resolution=---&value0-0-2=savedfolder%20saved-folder&type2-0-0=anywords&type0-0-3=anywordssubstr&query_format=advanced&value0-0-3=savedsearch%20virtualfolder&field0-0-3=short_desc&value0-0-4=unified%20smart&field0-0-2=short_desc&value0-0-1=virtual%20folder&type0-0-0=substring&value0-0-0=saved%20search&component=Backend&component=Database&component=Filters&component=Folder%20and%20Message%20Lists&component=General&component=Mail%20Window%20Front%20End&component=Search&field1-0-0=blocked&type0-0-2=anywordssubstr&product=MailNews%20Core&product=Thunderbird
No, there are no error messages in the Error Console.
Safe Mode start does not solve the issue.

Thanks for the pointer, Wayne. I forgot to say before that I have two IMAP accounts. It works now here. At least on my machine, it was probably a very similar issue to Bug 578148 : I have added
uri=mailbox://nobody@smart%20mailboxes/Sent
searchFolderFlag=200
scope=imap://me%40my.provider.de@more.provider.stuff.de/Sent|imap://me%40somewhere.else.de@other.provider.de/INBOX/Sent
terms=ALL
searchOnline=true
to virtualFolders.dat (which had only entries for Inbox, Drafts, and Trash) and it works now. I did not have to mess with msf files -- after adding those lines and starting Thunderbird, the messages showed up.
Best,
Sebastian.
