The IT team has recently been getting pages about nutch being unreachable (java was dying on the host). This instance of nutch was running on pm-app01, however nobody on the IT team knows what this is for.

We would like to know if this box is being usde by webdev, or if not, is it being used by ANYBODY at Mozilla. If not, we'd like to retire the box to decrease the noise from nagios every night.

Coincidentally, I brought this topic up with the Websites team yesterday. Let me CC all involved.

James, can you take it from here?

Summary: pm-app01 purpose inquiry and possible retirement → pm-app01 (nutch) purpose inquiry and possible retirement
Thanks Fred. I only know of mozilla.com, but it doesn't use it anymore. From what I hear, there are plans to integrate search again, but it's not high priority and nutch was really bad anyway. We'll probably use Google.

So I don't need it for anything, and if no one else hollas, I'd say it's ok to retire.

Laura can confirm this from the engagement end.
I can confirm that Nutch was pretty bad. I think it's okay to scrap it since we'll want to launch with a better solution once search is back on the site.
I'll second Laura's comments. There are plans to create better search across all of Mozilla's sites but I doubt we'd use Nutch.
Ben: When taking down the prod service, please also note that there's a staging site to go with it.
Before I destroy it, I'm going to shut it down and see if anything/anybody
complains.

This box got started again, but is still not in use.
Is it replicating itself?
perhaps, but a better guess is that one of the ESX hosts crashed. They've occasionally done so in such a way that the VMs don't come back up automatically, and the typical response from IT is to just spin up every VM. So this VM probably got swept along.
You may destroy it.

Nutch used to be the backend of mozilla.com's search function many summers ago when it still *had* a search function. Just last week, the universal tab reintroduced a search function but it is powered by Google. There are no plans to go back to nutch.
