I'll probably make an add-on to do this in the meantime, but it would be really nice to have the ability built in without having to install my own db triggers or wrap the autocomplete controller.
Actually, rather than providing the simple on/off toggle (or even in addition to it), this functionality would be even better, most users complaining about switch to tab have specific use-cases (often bound to work or web development) and this would address them without killing a functionality.
Plus the toggle could leverage this with a full whitelist/blacklist.

Given that I'm already working on bug 530209 , I'm also fixing this bug. I have a working fix in a patch in that bug. I can take it out and put it here as a new patch, but I'll need to constantly rebase it.

I think it's ok if this is tested separately after the initial bug will be fixed and will land.

I think it's not worth to spend time on this until we discussed the outcome and interaction with UX.
it's possible we don't even want it.

There's more important fixes to work on, this is just a nice-to-have.

Oh, I was thinking about that browser.urlbar.suggest.openpage pref we've added for bug 530209 which does not show switch to tab entries at all. But I see now what this bug is referring to only some entries, not all of them and I guess it's different work (I misinterpreted it).

A lot of people have been asking for a simple way to disable switch to tab, so if it's possible please include the preference when you fix bug 530209.

The pref is there already, this was about changing it from a bool to a blacklist. But we need a proper design/discussion rather than rushing this change.
