User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/3.6.13
Build Identifier: 4.0b11
Upon installation Firefox 4 seems to default all unknown filetypes to the Quicktime 7.6.6 plugin and therefore, when trying to open pdf files it opens up a blank page as the Quicktime plugin tries to open the pdf file, but unfortunately, as it cannot, most of the time, nothing ever happens and the page is blank. Some of the time, the Quicktime plugin crashes.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Firefox 4 and ensure you do not have any PDF plugins installed and that you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed prior to installing Firefox 4
2. Go to www.fidelity.com and create account or login
3. Click on account
4. Click on Statements and Records from the left nav area
5. Manuever to pdf statement and click on PDF to launch
Actual Results:
Blank page loads and PDF file never opens, sometimes a Quicktime plugin crash appears, but most of the time, nothing happens.
Expected Results:
Expect pdf file to open or at least the application assignment window as it does in Firefox 3.6 where you are prompted to select which application you would like to use to open the pdf files.
3.6 BEHAVIOR: What happens on 3.6 is a window appears and asks what application you want to open the pdf file with and then you are able to select Adobe Reader and the pdf opens fine in the browser.
RESOLUTION: If you go into Firefox 4 preferences and select Applications and scroll down to Adobe PDF document and select Adobe Reader, this resolves the problem.
QUESTION: Is the intention for FF4 to prompt the user to select the appropriate application like FF 3.6?

This is basically a bug in Quicktime as it reports that it supports application/pdf.
We added a workaround with bug 607444 but that seems to be not working in your case.

The default for FF3.6 and FF4.x is to just use the plugin for a content-type if it's installed. 2 different plugins that are supporting the same content-type will cause problems because you don't know which one wins.

does this still reproduce?
Flags: needinfo?
On my FF 21b in OSX 10.8, QuickTime does not report PDF capability.
This bug may depend on client side misconfiguration, such as old or corrupt QT preference files.
