Results: Shockwave Installers do not detect presence of Mozilla or NSpr1. You must use browse function to find plug-ins folder. Expected: NS 6 should appear as one of the options when you hit "try again" button in installer. Some notes: We have verified that this is a Netscape installation bug. The Netscape 6 installation process is not automatically adding Netscape 6 to the Macintosh desktop file. Since the Shockwave installer relies on the desktop file to locate the plugins folder, Shockwave installations to Netscape 6 will fail unless the user manually rebuilds their desktop file after installing Netscape 6. Older versions of Netscape did not have this problem.

clarification: I'm confirming that n6 install does not update the mac properly (is bugzilla the proper place to report this?).

This is in fact not the proper place for Netscape 6 bugs unless they are also present in Mozilla. Can you reproduce the problem with a recent mozilla build? In the meantime, changing platform to macintosh and component to installer instead of plugins.

If I am not wrong, this is bug 57012. Read peterl's comments from 2000-10-18 13:12. and comments From Brian Nesse 2000-11-29 11:20. If you agree, pls mark this as a duplicate.

I don't believe this is a dupe of bug 57012. This appears to be a problem with the installer code. If you install n6 onto a machine that already has n4 you'll notice that the n6 application is displayed with the n4 icon - this is because the 2 apps share the same app/creator type and the n6 installation doesn't force a desktop update. Many plugin installers find browser installations by searching for apps of type 'MOSS'. Since the n6 installer does not properly update the desktop, it is not found by the plugin installers. I believe this is a problem in the mozilla source base but doesn't manifest itself for the nightlies or milestone builds since mozilla uses creator type 'MOZZ'. There are no other applications of that same type, so the OS does the right thing and updates the desktop. A fix would probably involve unsetting the 'init' res bit after extracting the main application file from the download.

I agree with Sean that this is not a dupe of bug 57012. This bug will prevent the Shockwave installer from locating the Netscape 6 plugins folder. This is not part 57012's description.

Yes, I also agree, this bug is totally different. Changing the summary to better reflect the problem here. Old summary: Shockwave installers do not recognize Netscape 6 as a Netscape compatible browser Also, I talked with QA and they say Mozilla has the same installer as Netscape but I haven't tested this yet. Nominating mozilla0.8

The problem was that desktop db was being updated too early (before renaming the file) so the temp file named "decode" was entered in the desktop db. (Sadly, the original placement of the desktop db registration code never worked and was obviously not tested by the developer who made the addition to my inital AppleSingle decoder implementation. Sigh.) ssu, please review. sfraser, please super review. Thanks.

So now, we only register in the DTDB when the application file is in its final, post-install location, with all the Finder flags etc set? If so, sr=sraser
