Details

Flash 5 plugin does not support background transparency (that is, also in
netscape 4.x). If you look at the url http://www.paipai.net/
, you can see that the flash movie's background is white, but should be transparent.
are you sure the issue is with mozilla and not the flash plugin itself?
I had Flash 4 plugin, downloaded the Flash 5 plugin, installed it and loaded the
URL above. The background was white instead of transparent. The same flash
plugin works OK in IE. HOWEVER in Netscape 4.7, it works like in Mozilla, that
is no transparency. Obviously the problem is in the plugin itself. Marking it
invalid but depending on bug 64134.

so, iirc/iiuc, flash 9/10 (~2008) added proper wmode and roughly firefox 3.0.2 added wmode

actually, for windows it was flash player 6, so ~2002.
