Mozilla should allow the user to mark newsgroup messages read by date (for example "up to 1/2/2001" to leave the "unread" status only for messages newer than the given date). Netscape 4.* has this feature (directly under the Mark button) while Mozilla lack this in Message | Mark menu (true up to the last 2000 build). I do not think there is any other way to do that except to sort the messages by date, then mark them manually and finally use Message | Mark | As_read from menu (much more labor intensive).

Changing keyword to 4xp (as it is a Netscape 4 feature) and therefore removing RFE from Summary and reverting Severity to "normal" (as 4xp implies a bug, not RFE).
Severity: enhancement → normal
Keywords: 4xp
Summary: [RFE] Mark messages read by date → Mark messages read by date

I believe this bug is a duplicate of bug #16967

Actually, I think that ug #16967 should be marked as a dup of this, despite having been filed earlier, since this one shows that it's a 4xp bug and not an RFE.

I second to marking bug 16967 as a dup of this one. It is not only because I filed it, but because sspitzer eagerly accepted this bug, while putterman (the assignee of bug 16967) never commented on that one. Anyway, I believe this is mail front end, not back-end like in 16967 (isn't it?) Any comments from the persons responsible for the bugs? I'm adding putterman@netscape.com to CC.

It may be 4xp, but it's still a feature! I don't think 16967 is an RFE. I'm going to mark this as a dup because I can't tell any difference between the bugs. To be honest, it doesn't really matter which way it goes. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 16967 ***
