It would be cool if there were a menu item that allowed me to take a message's address list and turn it into a mailing list in the address book. It's a pretty advanced feature, so I wouldn't want it directly in the visible UI. Not likely to do this in the near future, but I wanted to get the idea into the system :-)

This shouldn't be so far in the future. Netscape 4.x allows cut and paste of comma-separated lists of email addresses into a new mailing list data-entry window. Mozilla seems to have no way to get a long list of names into a new mailing list without doing it one at a time, and this is a major inconvenience. The enhancement suggested in this bug would do it, but if allowing pasting of a comma-separated list into the data-entry box is easier, that would be a perhaps better substitute. (You could then view the message source and select the address list, cut it, and paste it.)
That's a cool idea, I miss that too. It might deserve its own bug unless the idea represented in this bug is considered obsoleted by your suggestion.

See bug 194784 for possible dupe (just requests adding to addressbook though, rather than a specific mailing list).
The adressContext extension by Mike Frieger does this: http://addresscontext.mozdev.org/
The adressContext extension by Mike Frieger http://addresscontext.mozdev.org/ looks promising, but on the associated email list there are unanswered complaints that it doesn't install, presumably by adding it to the xpi directory, or whether it can be used with Mozilla mail as well as with Thunderbird. It needs an installer and to work with both, and that information needs to be on Mike's nweb page.
-------- Original Message -------- From: Mike Krieger <email@example.com> Subject: Re: [Bug 64233] Create method to save msg addr list as a mailing list To: Jon Roland <firstname.lastname@example.org> addressContext is an extension - it is easily installed by going to Tools > Extensions in newer versions of Thunderbird, and you can save it to your Desktop or somewhere equally convenient (maybe your home folder). I am not aware of a single extension that distributes itself as an RPM or DEB package, please let me know if you can come up with an example that I can have a look at. Regarding Mozilla Mail compatibility, mozilla.org's main push nowadays are the standalone versions (Firefox, Thunderbird, and to a lesser extent, Sunbird). I have not used the Suite since version 1.5, and since the Extension Manager is completely different in the main Suite, porting addressContext would take a non-trivial amount of work - if anyone wants to step up and do it, however, the work would be more than welcome. Cheers, Mike
