Not sure how we missed this but I was just pointed to how Google Sites recommends using the rel="shorturl" and attribute where we are looking for id="shorturl", another commonly used system. There's no winning here until there's actually a standard but we should at least work with the major quasi-standards out there.

Note, this is how bugzilla references it's shorturl form in bugzilla bugs.
