There are tons of posts over the web about TB ignoring default settings, however I didn't find a bug filled upstream. So, here it is:
KDE, $BROWSER set to konqueror, yet, each time I click on a link, Firefox launches (*).
(*) not exactly, it adds a new tab to FF, so I have to chase, which FF TB had in mind. But this behaviour is irrelevant to ignoring the most basic settings of the system.
Reproducible: Always

We rely on gconf.
This is stating the fact (thank you), but the system is Linux/Unix. And system variables (environment) have their purpose there. Those settings are (or should be) common ground for every Linux/Unix app, otherwise they would make no sense.

judging by https://www.google.com/search?q=%22%24BROWSER%22+thunderbird&num=20&hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-nightly&hs=pni&tbo=1&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:unofficial&output=search&source=lnt&tbs=qdr:y&sa=X&ei=ob8fUN2gIcfz0gHj84HgCQ&ved=0CAgQpwUoBQ&biw=1300&bih=767 there does not quite seem to be a ton of postings.
Are there example URLs with lots of interested users?
Do you know that when no user watches, all bugs go away? True story.
Closing (I don't have time to waste on blogging or trolling).
