All the other buttons in our toolbars are verbs (file, reply, print, etc) or the very is easily deduced ([go] back). The "as read" button when reading news is very confusing, and I can't figure out what verb is implied. I assume it is "mark" but there is nothing that indicates that to be so. sorry for being annoying, this one really caught me off guard.
4.x linux had "As Read". I think idea was the button was supposed to convey "Mark" and the text for the button was "As Read". Just clicking the button does a "Mark as Read", but the mark button can do more (click on the little triangle) Would it help if the toolbar button was better? (we have the right one in the classic skin, but a bogus one in the modern skin.) I just checked, and 4.x mac had "Mark". No wonder it looked ok to me, and screwy to pink. what does 4.x win have? accepting until we get a ruling from jglick. personally, I could go either way on this one.

adding nbaca. adding 4.x, since 4.x mac had "Mark".
Summary: "As Read" is not a verb → change "Mark" toolbar text from "As Read" to "Mark"
4.x win has Mark with a context menu "as read, etc." underneath it.
"Mark" text with "as read" in submenu makes a lot more sense to me too.. I thought it was just a typo
The toolbar button should say "Mark" to be consistent with other toolbar buttons. (Once we get dropdown menus in toolbars for other mail items such as "Forward", and Mail Compose "Attachment"). As far as the dropdown menus repeating the name of the toolbar button, in 4.x Mac and Windows are not consistent with each other. "Mark" and "Forward" for Mac repeat the name of the button in the dropdown menu ("Forward Inline") while the Windows version doesn't repeat the button name (Forward button menu has "Inline", "Quoted" and "As Attachment"). Yet, the Reply and Reply All menus for Mac and Win are consistent (Mac doesn't repeat the name of the toolbar button). I would go with NOT repleating the button name in the menus.
fixed. button now says "Mark". thanks pink.

Remember that once bug 22056 is fixed, the toolbar might not be showing the labels for the buttons. That's why the menu items themselves should be `Mark as Read', `Mark as Unread' etc, even though `Mark' is already the label for the button.
Good point. For that reason we probably want to repeat the name of the button in the dropdown menus (consistently for all dropdown menus). But that's another bug. :-)
Build 2001-01-2204: NT4, Mac 9.04 Build 2001-01-1908: Linux 6.2 Verified Fixed, the button now says "Mark".
