The undo closed tab option doesn't persist once the left sidebar is closed. STR: 1) Open www.google.com 2) Scroll until the left sidebar is shown 3) Close the google.com tab 4) Notice the undo closed tab option at the bottom area of the sidebar 5) Scroll to the right until the left sidebar is no longer shown 6) Scroll back to the left until the left side is shown 7) Wonder what happened to the undo closed tab option I'm not sure if this was intentional or just overlooked in bug 582583. I can't see it being overlooked though as there is an option in about:config that is defaulted to save five closed tabs.
This is intentional. We only designed "undo closed tab" to handle accidental tab closures. It's not intended to be permanent. Closing, but pointing the UX team here in case we want to make a new UI for persistent undo

My sense is that "undo close tab" is more about recovering from slips (where there would be an immediate "oops - didn't mean to do that") than for wanting to reopen close tabs much later along. We can watch feedback/input, but I wouldn't start implementing a persistent undo right now.
