A "Compact All Folders" feature is missing.

Once one has acquired many folders (IMAP, Local Folders, news-servers), it it
VERY tedious to have to periodically open every folder (including all
subfolders) and compacting each one separately.

To save vast amounts of disk space, there needs to be a feature to compact all
folders with one command.
Confirming, enhancement.

3 Pane Mail. The "File" menu item "Compact This Folder" was supposed to be
"Compact Folders" like 4.x.

Yes! This feature should be in, BUT it doesn't mean that "Compact This Folder"
was supposed to be "Compact Folders", it depends on it's POP, Local & IMAP!!

Please refer to 4.7 PRD doc as following:
http://gooey/client/nova/specs/xprod/menus/

I have investigated as following:
1) 4.7
   - For POP/Local: Menu will turn into "Compact Folders" and it works on all
the folders
   - For IMAP/Marked as deleted: Menu will turn into "Compact This Folder" and
all the marked as deleted messages will be removed, but disk space didn't change
   - For IMAP/Deleted Msgs Move to Trash Mode: Menu will turn into "Compact
Folders", there is no action and no change for the disk space at all, I am
wondering to know whether we should disable the Compact Folders for this mode
......
   - For IMAP/Delete Immediately: Menu will turn into "Compact Folders", there
is no action and no change for the disk space at all, I am wondering to know
whether we should disable the Compact Folders for this mode....

2) 6.0
- For POP/Local: Menu currently is "Compact This Folders" and it only works on
that specific folder (not all folders) -- expected results should be "Compact
Folders" (for all folders)
   - For IMAP/Marked as deleted, Deleted Msgs Move to Trash Mode and Delete
Immediately: results are actually the same as 4.7....and I am thinking the menu
should keep "Compact This Folder" in IMAP Marked as Deleted Mode, but there are
still no action for other IMAP modes (Deleted Msgs Move to Trash Mode and Delete
Immediately modes), I am wondering to know whether it should be disable??
Anybody can answer this question?

Updating the summary from "Compact All Folders feature missing" to "Compact All
Folders feature is missing for POP & Local".

Summary: Compact All Folders feature missing → Compact All Folders feature is missing for POP & Local
Oops! Should be "Compact All Folders" feature is missing for POP, Local and
IMAP(except mark as deleted mode)"

But I am wondering to know whether "Compact All Folders" should be disable for
IMAP since it's no action at all....did I miss something?
Summary: Compact All Folders feature is missing for POP & Local → Compact All Folders feature is missing for POP, Local and IMAP(except mark as deleted mode)
I think it should NOT be disabled for imap; it should rather just delete the
"marked for deletion" files and then move on to the other local folders. This
will keep things simple for the user - compact all folders will do just that,
and those folders that cannot (IMAP) be compacted or are already compacted will
be checked that they are really so and then move on. The user just has to select
this feature and knows that ALL folders have been looked at. Done ;-)
For IMAP "Compact All Folders" does not apply

It should be "Compact This Folder" for "Mark as deleted" mode
where compact does an expunge on the mailbox.
For other modes it will not do anything.

cc'ing bienvenu for his comments

Compact always does an expunge, no matter what the delete model. However, only
in the imap delete model will the user notice anything.
So should we implement this feature for IMAP ?
we could - but I wasn't arguing that we should - just that compact for imap
always does do something.
fix checked in.

*** Bug 69386 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Build 2001-02-19-08: NT4, Linux RH 6.2, Mac 9.04
Fixed when Mail folders are selected.

Reopening: When a newsgroup is selected then "Compact Folders" is disabled which
is different than 4.7 behavior.

Here are more specifics on what I found:
1.With a folder selected from a POP, Local Folders, or IMAP (using any delete
model) account, the following appears:
a. File|Compact Folders
b. Context menu displays "Compact This Folder"

2.News account or newsgroup selected the following appears:
a. * File|Compact Folders is disabled but this is different from 4.7. In 4.7
when a newsgroup is selected then this option is enabled and appears to function
only on the mail folders.
b. Context menu does not display "Compact This Folder" as expected.

I am wondering if 4.7 is correct because when you right click on news folder
you do not see "Compress Folder" but on File menu -> "Compact Folders" is
enabled. Quite contradictory, isn't it.
I wouldn't reopen this bug for this, and I wouldn't really go on what 4.7 does -
we can decide what's right for 6.x., and file a new bug if we decide the current
behaviour isn't quite right. Does Compact All Folders work across all pop
servers, or just for the current account? If the latter, then disabling it when
a news account is selected is the correct behaviour, I'd say.
It works for just the current account. Based on david's comments closing this
bug again.
