User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0 After selecting text in a displayed page, the current context-sensitive right-button menu includes a "Search Google for 'selected text'" option. Very handy. It would also be handy to have a "Open Link in New Window" option if the selected text begins with "http://" or "www.". Many sites do not convert URLs into links and it would be convenient to have this shortcut, eliminating the copy'n'paste into the address bar. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go to CNET April Fool's page 2. Choose a URL in a comment and select the text 3. Right-click on the mouse Actual Results: No option to Open Link in New Window Expected Results: I'd like to see a Open Link In New Window option.
This feature was added for Firefox 4; see bug 454518 and bug 515512. If I select this text... example.org/foobar I see Open Link, Open Link in New Tab, and Open Link in New Window in my context menu. The heuristic used to determine whether to interpret text as a link is rather conservative, so that might be why you are not seeing it for some URLs. If there is a specific case where it is not interpreting text as a link and you think it should, please specify that. (Also, a shameless plug: there is an addon, QuickDrag, that lets you do this with a drag gesture instead of using the context menu, and its heuristics are much less conservative than the ones used for the Firefox context menu.)
I just installed FF4 on my iMac and didn't think to check it there before submitting (I've been using FF3 on my Windows PC). Sorry to have wasted your time.
