Does the issue still occur if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode How about with a new, empty profile? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile What anti-virus scanner are you using? Does the freeze go away if you turn off the scan file on download? (Type about:config in the Firefox location bar and filter for the string browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone. Set the value to false) Can you provide an example URL?
