In FF 4.0, Thunderbird is listed in Edit>Preferences>Applications>Mailto as "use thunderbird (default)" yet clicking an e-mail link does nothing.

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0) Gecko/20110414 Firefox/4.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0) Gecko/20110414 Firefox/4.0 In Edit>Preferences>Applications>Mailto, thunderbird is shown as default but it is dead. It also shows Gmail and Yahoo!mail as selections and they both work but they are not external mail apps. Clicking below that list on Application Details would only show the Gmail and Yahoo as possible selections without the default T-bird included. I clicked on "Use Other" and selected /usr/bin/thunderbird with the box checked to use this app alwaysand this provided a working solution. It is shown as added to the list. Clicking an e-mail in Firefox now properly brings up a T-bird Write window with e-mail address inserted properly. So, the solution in Firefox to provide the proper default should be simple, I hope. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Make sure Thunderbird is installed as the active mail program. 2. Open a page in Firefox with an e-mail address, eg., a Craigslist listing. 3. Click on the e-mail address to inquire about the listing. See Details. Actual Results: Before I made a new Thunderbird link in Edit>Preferences>Applications>Mailto, clicking an e-mail address in Firefox would do nothing. Expected Results: It should have opened a Thunderbird Write window with address already in place. As stated above, since it was easy to setup a correctly working entry in Edit>Preferences>Applications>Mailto, it should be easy to correct the dead link of "Thunderbird (default)".
Do your get the same result with a new clean profile? https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic%20Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile Have you downloaded your Firefox 4 directly from Mozilla, or has it been installed by a packet manager?

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:5.0a2) Gecko/20110418 Firefox/5.0a2 Works fine for me using the latest Aurora build.
I will try with a clean profile and comment here as soon as I can get it done. I upgraded to Firefox 4 in PCLinuxOS through Synaptic Package Manager.
I tried the instructions for setting up a new clean profile: 1. Closed Firefox. 2. Opened terminal and ran firefox -ProfileManager 3. Setup a new profile for Default User. 4. I started Firefox again and in a new tab I brought up the local Craigslist and picked an item to e-mail about. 5. I got some sort of failure to find URL message. 6. In Edit>Preferences>Applications>Mailto I saw that Thunderbird was not set as default so I selected the "use Thunderbird", closed it and tried the e-mail link again. This failed (see terminal message below) so I closed Firefox and deleted the new profile. Restarted Firefox and it is mow as it was before in my original description. Terminal entries after creating default user profile and trying to use the mailto: [pete@localhost ~]$ firefox -ProfileManager LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library libXt.so [libXt.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory] LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library libXext.so [libXext.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory] LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /opt/google/picasa/3.0/lib64/npPicasa3.so [/opt/google/picasa/3.0/lib64/npPicasa3.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64] ** (firefox:22252): WARNING **: Could not launch default application for URI: The specified location is not supported
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:6.0a1) Gecko/20110419 Firefox/6.0a1 By manually changing the preferred mail application, in this case to thunderbird-bin, the mail application no longer starts when clicking on an email link. I do not receive the same error as you, but instead, the following one: /usr/lib/thunderbird-3.1.8/thunderbird-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libmozjs.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I had only tried while Thunderbird (3.1.9) was already running. I just tested with it not running and got a properly opened Write window. The mail was properly sent without Thunderbird even being started up (surprised me). I was using a Craigslist mailto link to test and the address and subject line were inserted properly and it came up On Top. I changed the address to send to myself and sent it. When I restarted T-bird the mail was in my inbox. So, I have no problem using the /usr/bin/thunderbird selection for mail app that I manually selected through "use other". It's just the "use thunderbird (default)" selection that is included out of the box that quit working and I see no option to change properties for that existing link. It has worked fine till upgrading to FF 4.0 a week or so ago. Upgrade was done through Synaptic in PCLinuxOS GNOME. If no one else is getting the same error that I have managed to workaround, should this bug report be dropped?
