Hi Tara, 

Firefox 5 beta for mobile will also be releasing in early may and we need to add a link to the Firefox 5 beta for mobile from this page: (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/channel/)

Can we brainstorm a few options on how we can implement that? We can either add a promo box on the top right of the page? or maybe firefox 5 mobile beta logo? 

The sooner we know how we want to implement that the better as we also need to take localization into account in terms of timing and have this page ready by may 3rd.

Hi Grace.  I'd personally nor recommend adding a promo or another logo to this page - I think this page is most successful when it's clean and crisp (as it is now)... but we definitely need to find the proper way to add mobile here.

Do you anticipate having a mobile equivalent to the various channels on this page?   Perhaps we can create a simple toggle within each channel to highlight when mobile is available, or possibly add a mobile specific button.  

Sean / Slater, any thoughts?

It seems like we also need to update the newsletter signup to include mobile, right?

- mobile will only have a beta channel and final release. hence I was thinking of adding a link in the rapid release channel page to the mobile beta channel/final release page. we just need to find a way where it's visible enough yet not clutter the current page.

- if we are linking to the mobile beta channel page, then we can include the newsletter in that page and keep rapid release channel the way it is.

Ok.  Please find me tomorrow so we can chat in person.  Unless I"m missing something, it sounds like a simple update that can be done as a website bug - not a design bug.  But we can figure out where it goes and how it's done.

Hey Grace.  Looking at this again... I really don't think there is any design work that needs to be done.  This is simply adding a link referencing mobile under the "Beta" channel.  And to keep the page clean, I think it's best to not have any graphics and just highlight the "mobile" part of the message - keep it simple with a text/link.  

This can go below the Beta channel description, and above the Button.  It can even be a third bullet ( i like this) which references the availability of Firefox on mobile, and includes a link.

Thoughts?  If you agree, I'm going to move this to the websites component so the website gurus can take care of it.
Would be good to either duplicate this page for mobile or add a mobile section below desktop with similar buttons and CTAs. I think it's more of WebDev project now, but would love Slater/Steven Garrity to weight in on mobile strategy for this page.
Copying Chrissie & Jason, who are working on our mobile strategy for the overall site...they're probably the best people to weigh in here.

Generally speaking, I don't really love the idea of duplicating this page for mobile. Seems like it'd be cleaner to keep it all on one page.

Best case scenario would be that if you visit this page on a mobile browser you'd see a design optimized for mobile with links for the mobile downloads. If you visit it on a desktop browser it'd look basically like it does now but with smaller mobile download links in there somewhere...perhaps like Tara suggested in comment #6.

Just moved this over to a website bug, and categorized it as release 2.3 - Caitlin, that's happening on May 3. Is that consistent with your "early May" timing? Should we move to the following week instead?

Also, is it fair to sum up that this is basically now a matter of adding a link under the desktop download button? Is that for beta only?

Lastly, Jason and/or Chrissie...please comment on my best case scenario thought from comment #8 when you can. Is that something we add to the list for future mozilla.com mobile work?
Firefox 5 Beta is scheduled to release on May 17. It would be great for the "Coming Soon" button to be included for this May 3 push.

I feel that a beta and final button should be added underneath, similar to what you've done for desktop vs. a link that may get overlooked.
Slater - there's some debate as to how this page should behave depending on which platform you're on and if this should, in fact, be on two separate pages. Mayumi - want to outline your thoughts here?
I definitely want to give an equal nod to mobile on this page and promote mobile channels but I feel like the overall experience (for mobile and desktop) is going to get cluttered.  Additionally, when users have too many choices they tend not to choose anything at all.  I think with 3 desktop channels, 2 mobile channels, 2 desktop newsletters , 2 mobile newsletters, and 1 Mozilla newsletter this page is going to be a bit Nascar-esque.  Ideally this page auto-detects which device you're on and only shows download buttons for that device with a promo reminding them they can get these channels on all of their devices.  But if that's not doable in the near future then I don't think a one-page for all is the right solution.

but if i understood Slater's suggestion in comment 8, if we access this page via mobile, the button will be mobile downloads? (which means it's almost another site but mobile specific and have the same look and feel) and when visited via desktop, we include a link to mobile (will the link to a mobile site? or is it a link to download)

I think it's a good idea to have them both in one page (desktop and mobile). But again would like to see how that will look like. Still want to keep the simplicity of the page and not have it download button happy.
Valid points and I agree. I'll see what we can accomplish with device detection. Otherwise, I'll work with Sean/Slater on an approach for two pages if it comes to that. Thanks everyone.
I agree with Mayumi that so many choices on the page is overwhelming. Just having the channel choices, the newsletter form, and a blurb reminding them that these channels are available on all devices would be great, IMO. We could maybe even consider just making the newsletter form a link/blurb and linking to a separate page for the actual form.

One way to implement this would be to do something like the dynamic mozilla.com landing page, where the user is taken to mozilla.com/firefox/fx if they are an existing Firefox user. In this case, when the user navigates to mozilla.com/channel, they are taken to either mozilla.com/firefox/channel/ or mozilla.com/mobile/channel based on their user agent. So we would technically have two pages, but the user would only be shown the one most likely to be relevant to them. Another advantage of this is that If the user is interested in specifically viewing the channels for desktop, they can type in that url or click the link in the "all devices" blurb to be taken to desktop.

When we link to this page, we should be sure to set up user expectations appropriately. For instance, if we were to link here from mozilla.com/firefox/features (a desktop-specific page), we should probably link to mozilla.com/firefox/channel instead of mozilla.com/channel, since they are already looking up information about the desktop version. Similarly, from mozilla.com/m, we would link to mozilla.com/mobile/channel/. For most instances, though (like in our newsletter), we could link to mozilla.com/channel, since we don't know which platforms they are interested in.

P.S. all URLs are straight from the top of my head and should be considered examples / taken with a grain of salt ;)
While I don't think this is a precedent we want to set for most pages, the tab metaphor used on the Press Kits page (one tab for Desktop and one tab for Mobile) could be used in combination with Jason's suggestions from comment #15.

In the Press Kits page example, tab switching is immediate, but each tab does still have a distinct URL: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/press/kits/
Ok, we just met about this and came to the following conclusions:

- key goal for this bug remains giving mobile a presence on this page. The deadline for that is the beta launch on May 17, so I'm marking this as release 2.5.
- Jason's thoughts in comment #15 are very important, but will be addressed in a separate conversation (or bug)
- other spinoff issues, such as adding a checkbox for mobile newsletters, will also be addressed separately

So, regarding giving mobile a presence here's what we're thinking:
- condense channel newsletter design and give mobile a promo on the right 1/3 of the bottom section of the page
- specifically, I think we can move "Sign up for one or all of our Firefox channel newsletters." under the "Get the latest Channel News" mini-header, then scoot the actual sign-up fields over to the middle column. That should leave a space (not big, but big enough) for the mobile promo.

closing this bug since we are no longer just adding a link to this page but concluded plans required a redesign of the page and opening appropriate bugs based from recommendations that stemmed from this conversation

1. Redesign /firefox/channel page (bug 653288) 
2. Jason's thoughts in comment#15: mozilla.com/mobile/channel based on their user agent. So we would technically have two pages, but the user would only be shown the one most likely to be relevant to them. (653332)
