Hey Tara, We need to make some changes to the e-mail template that EC1 designed for Join Mozilla (jpg and psd attached). We are going to be sending out newsletters bi-weekly, so we need to make some minor changes. The current template (files attached) is designed for several stores. Can we alter the design in the following ways: *The template features one story (~250 words) and one fact box (~75 words). The fact box can either go below the main content or on the side. *There is a headline and a subheadline for the main story *There is a headline for the factbox *Change the header to "Read this in your browser/Send to a friend" We'd like to get this by WB May 2 and then off for slicing into html. If we can get it sooner that would be great, but I understand that there's a lot going on. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. Cheers, C
PSD is too big to attach. Let me know where to send it to when you're ready.
One last thing. Could you get two mockups of the new design: 1) With copy and an image 2) With a screen cap of a video and ~ 50 words of copy. Let me know if you'd like copy to fill in for this too.
Hey Chelsea, have time for a quick chat on this tomorrow? Not sure if I fully understand the factbox reference and the changes you're looking to make. Hoping that our freelancer can help with this. Can you shoot me the PSD please? thanks.
Absolutely. Ping me when you're in and we can find a time. Freelance help would be great on this as my timelines were just moved up. Sending the PSD now.
cc-ing Rhonda ! she's going to help us whip this up.
Yay Rhonda! Tara I'm free any time between 11:30 and 2 p.m. PT today if you want to talk.
OK! Talked to Chelsea... Rhonda, this'll be a pretty quick one for you: * We'd like to create a template based off of the existing one (JPG attached, and PSD sent via email) for a single/feature story issue. So, it would look like this: * Keep the same header * Get rid of the side navigation, table of contents, etc. * get rid of all all articles, except for one. * Have a single feature story at the top: Header, sub-head, body of story, and space for an image or video. * The image or video space needs to be flexible, but lets use the aspect ratio of a standard video box, and that way it can be good for either a video or an image. Chelsea can tweak as she sees fit. * Below this main story, we need a little promo style module for "fast facts" - but we don't want to title it with "fast facts", each will have a unique title. * Below that, the standard footer. * You can grab some rough copy to plug in, here: http://etherpad.mozilla.com:9000/JoinMozillaNewsletterDraft Would be great to have this done by Wednesday of next week. Rhonda, ping me if you have any questions! Thanks
Hey Tara-- Here is the first take. I wasnt sure how large the video image should be, so take a look and let me know what you think. :) --rhonda http://www.intothefuzz.com/rhonda/Join_email_template/MOZ-018_NewsletterEmailBlast_single.jpg
Thanks Rhonda. That's a great first take. Few edits from me and I'll let Chelsea also comment with her feedback: * I don't think we need two graphic blocks. Just one, that we could use either for a photo or a video. That's why I thought that perhaps the graphic block could be big enough to hold both. It's hard figuring out how to do the template when we don't know whether we're using a picture or a video, and what the graphic sizes are. Chelsea, do you have any more (perhaps clearer) direction here for Rhonda to follow? * The main article should probably be at the top, with the graphic blog somewhere below it or to the side. * The promo shouldn't look like another article, I'd like to style that differently so it stands out as a different block of content. Doesn't have to be too flashy, but it should be different than the main article. * I also think we've given too much weight to the graphic/video spaces. The articles will likely need more space for copy. Chelsea, additional thoughts?

Hey guys, I agree with Tara, we don't need two graphic blocks and that they're weighted a little heavy. There will either be a graphic in the newsletter or a video. Not both. Also, +1 on the graphic or the side or below and the promo looking slightly different. Thanks! C
Hey guys-- The new proof is here: http://www.intothefuzz.com/rhonda/Join_email_template/MOZ-018_NewsletterEmailBlast_single.jpg The reason I left the video/image area the size that it is up top (instead of shortening it vertically)is because Tara requested earlier in the discussion that we keep the aspect ratio of the current videos on the site, which is what this is. The video image isnt as large as what is on the FF site, but it is the same aspect ratio. That is also why I am using a square frame around the video/image instead of making it irregular like the original design (to allow for an embedded video) Let me know what you think. --rhonda
Depends on: 652603
Hey Rhonda, I like the promo box and I like the look of the frame around the video. Tara, what do you think?
Looks good, but... as discussed... I'd like to see if Rhonda can use the current mozilla & you newsletter template so we have a more consistent design across our newsletters. I've pinged her separately on that. Stay tuned.
Sounds good to me. Thanks Tara.
Hey guys-- I took a stab at incorporating the current Join Mozilla landing page design style into the Mozilla & You email template, keeping the same content that we used for the last round of email designs. http://www.intothefuzz.com/rhonda/Join_email_template/join_mozilla_email.jpg Take a look and let me know your thoughts. :) --rhonda
I like that a lot Rhonda.
Hey Chelsea-- I can hand this off if this is approved? :) --rhonda
I'd also like to get John and Sean's opinion on this. We'll be creating a few newsletters (mobile, and about:mozilla included) and I want to make sure they all feel consistent. We had a separate thread about this... want to make sure they're cool with this approach.
Sounds good to me Tara. Let me know if they're cool with it.
Hey all. Great start to the template Rhonda! Some thoughts: - The bottom graphics are a bit rough (jagged edges) - could you try adding the vertical lines back to the gradient background? - the rounded edges were squished on main content area... looks as if box was rasterized instead of changing the paths to resize the height of the main box. - second rounded box (promo box) should have same radius of rounded edges as top box. - bump the crowd up so the footer stuff isn't so far separated. its fine if the crowd tucks in behind the main content area. Other than that, my only concern would be building this as an HTML email - mainly the size with the bg gradient background and the heavy visual footer. If need be, this design would still hold up with the graphic footer removed and just a text footer (grey text on the white bg) If it is doable and not too big, looks good!
Should we get Winston to assess?
Thanks for the input! The revised version is here: http://www.intothefuzz.com/rhonda/Join_email_template/join_mozilla_email.jpg :) --rhonda
Looks good to me. Sean? Chelsea?
My name is neither Sean nor Chelsea, but +1 from me.
Thank you John! I had already gotten an implied +1 from you in another email :) so, had assumed. Thanks though ;)
+1 from me.
Hey - Sorry I'm chiming in late here, but few things I should mention. - In the mainstream newsletter, we didn't use the gradual fade and used a solid color instead. It avoids using an image which is blocked by default on most email clients. Also - not sure how we'd code that - but if it's a background image, remember those are notorious for mucking up email rendering. - Just need to make sure all the fonts can be sliced and displayed correctly in email. Most web fonts work fine - but no @font-face. - I'd recommend reducing the footer to roughly match the width of copy area (600 - 650 pixels wide). In Hotmail and several others, the wide images are probably going to be sliced off (or simply not display properly). Thin is better - also helps with folks reading on smart phones. I attached an image of the mainstream newsletter so you can see how we handled the background color. Hope this helps.
Hey All-- Thanks Winston for the advice. I think the "people" at the bottom of the email is pretty central to the branding for the campaign, so I would like to see it stay. To that end, I made the people graphic fit on top of the footer which is now the width of the email itself. I also made the background a solid blue. Will this work? --rhonda http://www.intothefuzz.com/rhonda/Join_email_template/join_mozilla_email.jpg
Good on my end. Thanks!
Good from my end too!
Ok folks. Closing ! and also closing Bug #652603 as well since we killed two with one.
